CHARLIE BATCH & THE BEST OF THE BATCH FOUNDATION ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE C3 (CAMPBELL’S CYBER CENTER) COMPUTER LAB EXPANSION

THE C3 (“C-CUBED”) LAB EXPANSION IS MADE POSSIBLE BY A GENEROUS DONATION BY WILLIAM V. CAMPBELL AND THE CAMPBELL COMMUNITY & EDUCATION FOUNDATION

For Immediate Release

April 1, 2014

Homestead, PACharlie Batch & the Best of the Batch Foundation are excited to announce the launch of their new C3 (Campbell’s Cyber Center) Computer Lab expansion. The C3 (“C-cubed”) Lab expansion was made possible through a generous donation by William “Bill” V. Campbell and the Campbell Community & Education Foundation (CCEF).

The CCEF donation consists of new Apple hardware, including: 40 iMac computers; 20 MacBook Air computers; 30 iPad Air tablets and three Apple TVs.

The new C3 Lab expansion will allow the Best of the Batch Foundation to continue its efforts to provide a state-of-the-art technology, resource and educational center in support of their ‘Steel Valley School District Alternate Education Program,’ a seven-year partnership between the SVSD and the Batch Foundation. The Program, located at the Best of the Batch Foundation’s ClubHouse Corner, provides at-risk students the opportunity to improve their educational and behavioral standing through coordinated lesson plans and community work at the Batch Foundation offices & computer lab, with the goal of transitioning back into their schools.

With the addition of the new C3 Campbell’s Cyber Center computer lab expansion, the Batch Foundation is able to provide additional resources in their tutoring, mentoring and study hall programs, and now has the capability to work on-site with more than 80 students at a time. The new C3 Lab also allows for expanded assignments and lesson plans, and the integration of those assignments into mobile devices, schools and other off-site locations.

“We are so appreciative of the generous gifts made by Mr. Campbell and his Foundation,” said Charlie Batch. “His long-standing dedication to our mission has been key to our ability to provide our students with the best possible educational opportunities, and with this upgrade in our technology, he has given us an enormous boost in our efforts to help students succeed.”

One student who has participated in the Batch Foundation’s SVSD Alternate Education Program, affectionately calls the program the “Charlie Batch School,” and said: “Without this place, I probably would not be going to school; or I’d be expelled by now. But I’m seeing how teachers and Charlie Batch do care about my future, and that makes me want to do better.”

The Campbell Community & Educational Foundation enhances community environments along with strategic development for the educational advancement of students. Steel Valley native, William “Bill” Campbell has served on the Board of Directors for the Best of the Batch Foundation for a total of eight years, with the past two as Board Chairman.

“We are thrilled, and extremely proud, to play a part in providing upgraded technology and scholarship opportunities for students and the community in the Steel Valley area at the Batch Foundation’s ClubHouse Corner,” said Campbell. “This is a much-needed resource center that will assist students, along with their teachers and families, to achieve educational goals and will help give them expanded opportunities to prepare for their futures.” Currently, the Best of the Batch Foundation works with more than 2,300 kids annually in five counties in the Pittsburgh area.

Charlie Batch Kicks Off 8th Annual “BatchPacks For Kids” Program

CHARLIE BATCH’s 8th ANNUAL ‘BATCHPACKS FOR KIDS’ PROGRAM KICKS OFF AT ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN PITTSBURGH SEPTEMBER 3

BATCH FOUNDATION TO DISTRIBUTE 1,500 BATCHPACKS FILLED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES & BOOKS TO ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS & TEACHERS IN PITTSBURGH TO HELP START THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED FOR SUCCESS

For Immediate Release
Monday, September 2, 2013

Homestead, PA Charlie Batch and the Best of the Batch Foundation will kick off the 8th Annual BatchPacks for Kids Program tomorrow, September 3, 2013 at 9:00am at Barrett Elementary at 221 E. 12th Ave in Homestead, PA.

BatchPacks will also be distributed to select elementary and middle school students and teachers at Sto-Rox, Steel Valley, Duquesne, Clairton, Grandview, Hutchinson and West Homestead schools.

Over the past seven years, the Batch Foundation has provided more than 6,000 BatchPacks to kids in four counties in Pittsburgh. This year, Charlie Batch will distribute more than 1,500 bags filled with school supplies and books to elementary and middle school students and more than 200 bags filled with supplies that teachers need that will help them start the year with the tools they need to be successful.

“With recent cutbacks in schools, many kids and teachers are not provided with all the supplies and tools necessary for their curriculum, which can prevent them for achieving their highest potential,” said Charlie Batch. “So many parents are unable to afford everything their kids are asked to bring to school, and we’re fortunate to be in a position to help them. Every year we grow the BatchPacks program to include more kids, and for me, it’s one of the most gratifying things we do here at the Foundation.”

BatchPacks are filled with many supplies kids and teachers need throughout the school year, including: pens, pencils, markers, crayons, folders, index cards, glue, glue sticks, tape, binder clips, notebooks, white boards, protractors, compasses, erasers, scissors, highlighters, hand sanitizer, copy paper, binders, staples, pencil sharpeners, etc.

The BatchPacks program also provides kids with an opportunity to give back to their community. All students are asked to donate their old BatchPacks back to the Batch Foundation to help other kids in need.

Sponsors of the BatchPacks for Kids Program include: Costco Wholesale #649, Touch of Grey, UPMC Health Plan, MESA, Walmart (West Mifflin), Dignity & Respect for Youth and Comcast.

Batchpacks will be distributed at each school by Batch Foundation volunteers, including employees from Eat & Park Banksville and Costco.

CHARLIE BATCH WINS 2013 BYRON “WHIZZER” WHITE AWARD

DeMaurice Smith Presents 2013 Whizzer White Award to Charlie Batch

DeMaurice Smith Presents 2013 Whizzer White Award to Charlie Batch

Steeler Charlie Batch Wins 2013 Byron “Whizzer” White Award for Community Service

Best of the Batch Foundation to Receive $100,000 Donation from NFLPA

January 31, 2013 (New Orleans, LA)—Today, Charlie Batch became the fourth Pittsburgh Steeler to receive the coveted Byron “Whizzer” White Award since its inception in 1966; he joins Andy Russell (1972), Rocky Bleier (1974), and Franco Harris (1981). The award is named for Supreme Court Justice Byron White, a Colorado native whose professional football career started with the Pittsburgh Steelers (then the Pittsburgh Pirates) in 1938. Steelers founding owner Art Rooney said of White, “Of all the athletes I have known in my lifetime, I’d have to say Whizzer White came as close to anyone to giving 100 per cent of himself in competition.” Byron “Whizzer” White also played for the Detroit Lions, where this year’s awardee, quarterback Charlie Batch, spent the first four seasons of his professional career.

Charlie Batch’s commitment to the Greater Pittsburgh community is evident through the many good works he initiates and supports, including:

•D&R Sportsmanship Program – started in 2012 in conjunction with the WPIAL and Dignity & Respect Campaign, throughout the nine-week high school football season, a member of each “Game of the Week” team was selected by his teammates to receive the D&R Sportsmanship Award in recognition of treating others with dignity and respect.
•Project C.H.U.C.K. – a seven-week summer basketball camp for girls and boys, ages 7 through 18 that incorporates a daily study hall where participants read and discuss assigned books. This program started in 2001 and has served 3,085 youth.
•Batch Packs – a back-to-school initiative to provide students with basic supplies they’ll need for the upcoming school year. More than 5,000 “Batch Packs” have been distributed since the program’s inception.
•Best of the Batch Club – students who demonstrate excellence in school work, attendance, behavior, and extra-curricular activities are rewarded with a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame with Charlie Batch.
•Batch of Toys – an annual holiday toy drive, with Charlie and his teammates signing autographs for fans in exchange for new, unwrapped toys. More than 25,000 toys were distributed during the program’s first four years, with a goal of 10,000 toys during the 2012 holiday season.
•Read Across America – Charlie visits five schools on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss Day, to share his favorite author with students.

The Byron “Whizzer” White Award is accompanied by a monetary contribution to the foundation or charity of the winner’s choice. This year, a $100,000 donation will be made to Best of the Batch Foundation, an organization established in 1999 by Charlie in memory of his sister (Danyl) who was murdered, an innocent victim of gunfire between rival gangs. The mission of Best of the Batch is to provide financially challenged youth and their families with the purpose, desire, and resources to give their best efforts in all they do throughout their lives. Sources of revenue for this nonprofit organization include the annual “In the Pocket” fundraiser, corporate sponsorships, individual and United Way donations. For more information on Best of the Batch Foundation, visit batchfoundation.org.

The Byron “Whizzer” White Award is the highest honor the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) can bestow upon a player, and is presented to the player who is just as dedicated off the field as he is on the field. The 2013 Byron “Whizzer” White Award judging panel included Mike Florio (Pro Football Talk), Kathleen Sebelius (U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Service) Jim Trotter (Sports Illustrated), Richard Trumka (President, AFL-CIO), Brian Water (NFLPA Executive Committee).

BATCH A FINALIST FOR BYRON “WHIZZER” WHITE AWARD – BATCH FOUNDATION HAS HAD 12-YEAR IMPACT ON KIDS
steelers.com
January 23, 2013
Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch is a finalist for the Byron “Whizzer” White Award, an honor given by the NFL Players Association to a player for their work in the community.

“It’s humbling,” said Batch. “To be a finalist for the highest award you can receive from the NFLPA is special. To be considered one of those guys is special.”

Batch started his Best of the Batch Foundation 12 years ago, serving those in the Pittsburgh area, including Homestead where he was raised. The foundation provides an array of services, from computer literacy programs to summer basketball leagues.

“I am blessed to play here for this organization and be this close to home, allowing me to be hands on with everything I am doing with the foundation and have people believe in me,” said Batch. “I can’t do this by myself. We go out there and try to change lives and when people see that, it’s even more humbling.”

Batch has been able to see the impact the foundation has had on kids and looks forward to continuing to develop and grow the foundation.

“A lot of kids started with us when they were seven or eight years old and we see kids graduating from high school, heading off to college and beyond,” said Batch. “When you see the kids growing up, and them getting the opportunity to go out and live their dreams, that is what we are all about. We want to have them reach beyond their expectations.”

CHARLIE BATCH AND HARLEM GLOBETROTTER CHEESE CHISHOLM DELIVER ANTI-BULLYING MESSAGE TO KIDS
pittsburgh.cbslocal.com – KDKA
December 11, 2012
A Steel Valley alum teamed up with Harlem Globetrotter Cheese Chisholm Tuesday afternoon and delivered a message to kids at Steel Valley Middle School. The message was heard loud and clear. Not one, but two athletes came out to encourage youngsters to be the best they can be and to never bully anyone. Batch was made an honorary Harlem Globetrotter Ambassador of Goodwill for his community work through the Best of the Batch Foundation.

SMILES ARE WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT FOR BATCH – “BATCH OF TOYS” TOY DRIVE AND DELIVERY

steelers.com
December 4, 2012

Batch is as excited about this Christmas Eve as the kids, so anxious to go out and deliver the toys for the sixth straight year, many of them donated by Steelers’ fan at the annual “Batch of Toys” drive, held at Dave & Buster’s at the Waterfront on Tuesday. Batch and his teammates signed autographs for those who brought toys.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Batch of the support he gets. “This time of year is always special for me. So many people support it, fans believe in what we are doing. We even have wrapping parties and everyone comes over and wraps them.”
The toys will be shared with local women’s shelters, the Salvation Army, UPMC Children’s Hospital AIDS patients, Pittsburgh Housing Authority, McKee Temple and families in the Mon Valley and Allegheny County that Batch will visit on Christmas Eve.

An excited child who can barely sleep in anticipation of Christmas morning will jump off their couch and curiosity will get the best of them as they peek out the window to see if maybe, just maybe Santa Claus is coming to the front door instead of down the chimney. Standing in front of them will be Charlie Batch, holding not just a sack of toys, but the dreams of what Christmas morning is made of.

“When you are able to go out and see the expressions on a kid’s face when you are out there delivering the presents, no matter if it’s Christmas Eve or going to women’s shelters or Salvation Army, it’s something that gets me,” said Batch.

BATCH GETS HOMETOWN HONOR
steelers.com
November 30, 2012

There is no doubt that quarterback Charlie Batch is a hometown hero, so on Friday night it was only fitting that he was inducted into the Steel Valley Hall of Fame. Batch, who is from Homestead, PA., part of the Steel Valley, was honored for his achievements on the field and his contribution to the community. Batch established the Best of the Batch Foundation, giving back to those in the Steel Valley area in many ways, including educational programs.

“I am in a rare situation where I am home playing football,” said Batch. “To be so close to home and be able to continue to do what we are doing with the foundation and make an impact on the community is special because there are so many people involved and believe in our cause.

CHARLIE BATCH GETS COMPETITIVE FOR A GOOD CAUSE WITH “IN THE POCKET” EVENT
nflplayers.com
November 8, 2012
The Executive Committee member and Steelers veteran hosted his 6th Annual “In the Pocket with Charlie Batch” for charity. Proceeds from the event help run the Batch Foundation’s Reading and Computer Literacy Program and allows them to house the Steel Valley Alternative School Program. In addition to the hundreds that have used the computer lab, there are currently 11 kids in the alternative school program, sent to the foundation because of behavioral problems in main stream schools or through court order.

Some refer to the alternative school program as the “Charlie Batch School,” and parents have inquired about getting their kids in the program. For Batch that is a compliment because it shows they are doing something right, but his hope is that all the kids are able to attend their own schools and not have to resort to alternative schooling.

“We have them going to school, but it’s not cool to be in this school because you got kicked out of school and are in an alternative program,” said Batch. “They are angry because now they can’t play sports and have to focus on school with no ball. You have to encourage them why they are going to school – to graduate. That is a tough sell because they feel there is no reason to go to school. We always try to turn the negative into a positive and try to get them back to their main school.”

BRENTWOOD, MONESSEN STUDENTS TAUGHT RESPECT AFTER DISPUTE AT EVENT
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
September 5, 2012
Students, local officials and Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch gathered Tuesday at Monessen High School for an assembly about respect stemming from a quarrel between Monessen and Brentwood at a basketball game earlier this year. The dispute was sparked when two Brentwood students wore banana suits at the Feb. 3 game. Some people from Monessen interpreted the suits as racist, despite the fact that the students had worn the suits at other games. Several Monessen supporters also said the mostly black Monessen team was subjected to racial taunts, but a WPIAL investigation found that no racial harassment occurred. The organization did, however, ask the districts to work together to address any hostility. Mr. Batch and the UPMC Dignity & Respect Program met with students from each school to come up with a program, which they explained to the students Tuesday as they had in Brentwood.

When Brentwood and Monessen made national headlines in February after allegations of a racially-charged atmosphere at a basketball game, Charlie Batch took his criticism to Twitter. Yet, when it needed to heal the hostile relationship between schools and their respective communities, the WPIAL turned to the Steelers backup quarterback and Homestead native. Together, under Batch’s guidance, the schools launched the Sportsmanship, Dignity and Respect Campaign on Wednesday afternoon before an assembly of more than 400 at Brentwood High School.

Charlie feels that “treating each other with dignity and respect is a part of everyday life,” and if we all treated each other equally, “violence levels would be down, and it would help our communication with each other.” Charlie was selected as the May Dignity & Respect Champion for his tireless work to give back to his and surrounding communities.

MEMORY OF CHARLIE BATCH’S SLAIN SISTER LIVES THROUGH HIS YOUTH FOUNDATION
thepostgame.com

April 26, 2012
For the past 10 years, West Street has been home to Best of the Batch, the educational foundation of the Steelers’ veteran quarterback. It’s a place where kids go to learn at what they call The Charlie Batch School, where they can work at one of 26 computer stations and where they play basketball, protected from the danger on neighboring streets.

But located in the same area, Homestead Cemetery sits on 22nd Street, an intersection Charlie Batch must pass through when he travels to his mother’s home from practice.

It’s the plot of land where his sister has been buried for the past 16 years and a cemetery that for a time, he couldn’t bring himself to pass by without all of the anger associated with his sister’s murder resurfacing from the depths where Danyl Lynn Settles’ memory was once buried deep inside Charlie Batch.
The memory of his sister inspired the formation of Best of the Batch.

From the start, Batch was clear on one thing: His work in the community would be centered in the neighborhood Danyl was murdered. Not only would the foundation’s efforts honor his sister’s memory, but it gave residents a sense that Batch knew what it’s like to live in Homestead.
